Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals
The Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals is an autonomous arm of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals.The certification board is committed to the setting of counselor standards and protection of the public good.
The certification board engages in the following functions:
Certifies counselors above and beyond their license to provide counseling services;
Administers licensure and certification examinations;
Certifies providers of continuing education;
Monitors and enforces counselor ethics; and,
Works to promote counselor reciprocity.
The Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals is a proud member of IC&RC, the global leader in the credentialing of prevention, addiction treatment, and recovery professionals. Organized in 1981, it provides standards and examinations to certification and licensing boards in 25 countries, 47 states and territories, five Native American regions, and all branches of the U.S. military.

Practice Exams were developed to mimic IC&RC’s Computer Based Testing platform to enhance a candidate’s preparation experience. Candidates have 60 minutes to complete the 50 question practice exam. At the completion of each practice exam, candidates are provided with a score report detailing their performance based on the various content areas of the examination.We are pleased to announce the availability of an IC&RC Prevention Specialist practice examination! IC&RC now offers practice exams for the following three examinations: Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC), Clinical Supervisor (CS), and Prevention Specialist (PS). Practice exams for all other examinations will be forthcoming. Practice exams are just one of the many resources available to candidates preparing for their IC&RC examination.
IC & RC Updates
The first administration date for the updated examination will be Monday, February 16, 2015. All candidates taking the ADC examination on or after February 16th will be taking the updated examination.
The updated examination will included the following four domains:
1) Screening, Assessment, and Engagement
2) Treatment Planning, Collaboration and Referral
4) Professional and Ethical Responsibilities
The first administration date for the updated AADC examination will be Monday, May 11, 2015. All candidates taking the AADC examination on or after May 11th will be taking the updated examination.

Changes to the examination include
- Emphasis on identifying, diagnosing, and/or treating co-occurring substance use, mental health, and physical health disorders
- Deletion of the Clinical Supervision and Research Design, Analysis & Utilization domains
- Combining the remaining eight domains into four essential domains
- Inclusion of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria
- Providing services in a trauma-informed manner
- Utilizing technological advances is service delivery
- Utilizing various treatment modalities including but not limited to Medication Assisted Treatment

Dr. Phyllis Gardner of Texarkana, Texas was elected IC&RC President at the IC&RC Fall meeting. Dr. Gardner is a Professor of Sociology at Texarkana College.Dr. Gardner holds a doctoral degree in Sociology from Texas Woman’s University and is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, Certified Clinical Supervisor, and Certified Advanced Addictions Counselor. She has served the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals in various capacities since 1990 and is a past president of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals.
Ms. Ivonne Tapia is the Chief Executive Officer of Aliviane, Inc. TCBAP Vice Chair. Before being selected CEO, Ms. Tapia was Deputy Director where she oversaw the organization' operations, census, and resources for youth in prevention, intervention, and treatment programs. Ms. Tapia provides vision, leadership and direction for the largest substance abuse organization in West Texas. She sits on numerous statewide committees, and is a passionate advocate for vulnerable populations. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, Advanced Certified Prevention Specialist with over 20 years of experience in the field of Addiction and Behavioral Health.
